Iām Erinn and Iām in my final year at University of Southampton studying for an MEng Aeronautics and Astronautics. Recently, I have interned on the Open Flight Deck project after completing my Individual Project which looked at air accidents from a systems perspective.
Once you become aware of everyday items where the female user was not perhaps included in the design process; it opens your eyes to other designs where this is the case too. Unfortunately, within my degree there is a clear gender gap, with females only making up for a small percentage of the cohort. Despite numbers growing slightly, more needs to be done at all system levels to ensure there is equality between genders. It is great to be part of a group of like-minded people with a passion for gender equity; through helping develop academic training to promote gender equity and guidelines which can be used in practice.
